I own a 2004 Toyota Matrix 2wd base model with 5-speed manual transmission. I had 75,000 miles on it and very few issues until one day on the highway, the transmission seized up completely. The only recourse was to replace the entire transmission assembly.

I have a 2006 Toyota Matrix xrs 6 speed manual transmission. I purchased the car new and have serviced the car with the dealership from day one. Today I brought it in for its 45000 mile service and told them to check the clutch because we noticed it sticking/slipping in 5th gear. Turns out I need to replace the clutch at a cost of $1200 even though I have their platinum service/extended warranty plan. I haven't even worn out the brakes and I have to replace the clutch!!!! I am a 46 year old mother and have driven several cars with a manual transmission and never had to replace a clutch with such low mileage. I read on edmunds car space about this and it said to come to your website to document this.

About 10:00 pm when I was just pulling on to I-84 in downtown hartford, CT the manual transmission of my Toyota Matrix made a very loud grinding sound and I could not move. Thankfully, my momentum enabled me to get over to the side of the highway but I was still sticking out into the right lane just around a curve in the road. A state police trouper pulled behind me almost immediately and put on his lights to warn cars away. Otherwise, I am certain my car would have been rear-ended while I waited for the tow truck. The repair shop I had the car towed to said that a bearing had failed and destroyed the transmission. I had to get a completely new transmission at a cost of over $2000. This car had over 105,000 miles on it, but they were mostly highway miles and the transmission should never have failed this early.

I was entering the 1-10e trying to merge in with traffic when the throwout bearing failed. I tried to shift into 3rd gear, but it was stuck in 2nd. I had to slam the gear into place to prevent getting run over by a SUV. This was my second near-death experience this year in my car due to the transmission. Earlier, when the car was at 74k, the front axle on the transmission broke. This broke in the middle of a busy intersection where I had to keep swaying my body forward until the car had enough momentum to roll across. After replacing the front axle, I really do not have the money to fix another transmission issue. Toyota needs to recall their transmissions on the 2004 Matrix, I don't know how many more times I can afford to cheat death.

Toyota says there are no transmission problems however if you look on line one will see a rash of 5 speed Toyota Matrix transmission problems with a bearing always being blamed, I cannot believe this many people beat there 5 speeds to death in a 4 doorstation wagon. Also noted was Toyota had 15 transmission waiting when mine was ordered-- perhapsthey know something about the transmission problem. No one will say if the new transmission has being improved over the old unit,because that would mean there was a problem to start with. Thanks to Toyota I have a car with a transmission that may have the same problem it started with at a cost of 3,400. 00 more.
